Woman mauled by cheetahs during birthday vacation in South Africa

Violet D'Mello's 60th birthday celebration turned gruesome last Saturday when she was mauled by a pair of Cheetahs during a trip to a South African game reserve,              according to      a report by ABC News.

Violet D'Mello and her husband Archibald were on vacation from Scotland when they visited the Kragga Kamma Game Park in Port Elizabeth and were allowed to pet two brother cheetahs, Mark and Monty, the report said.

But one of the animals grabbed an 8-year-old girl by the leg, and Violet tried to stop it, according to the report. After the girl ran away, both cheetahs turned and attacked Violet for more three minutes while she tried to play dead, the report said. “I just remember … something biting my head and dragging me down,” Violet D'Mello said.

Her husband continued to take pictures until he realized his wife was being bitten and scratched on her head, legs and stomach, the report said.
Violet, though, suffered no life-threatening wounds, according to the report, despite losing a lot of blood and receiving multiple stitches on her thighs and scalp.

“We’re very angry about what happened because we were told the situation was safe and it obviously wasn’t,” Archibald D'Mello said in another ABC News report. “The park said they didn’t know what had caused the cheetahs to attack but they shouldn’t let tourists in unless they’re sure it is safe.”
Park manager Mike Cantor said the reserve had never had a problem with the cheetahs before.
"It's not something we've ever really experienced," Cantor said. "It's obviously very unfortunate, and we're looking into what may have startled or riled up the cheetahs."
